BENDING THE CURVE ON CARBONIZATION TO ADVANCE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS

ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE

Navistar takes seriously our responsibility to address the challenges of climate change and to do our part to accelerate the movement toward sustainable mobility.

Two strategic areas – decarbonization and circularity – will help drive us there.

easing greenhouse gas emissions
Within the transport sector, currently the largest source of roughly 23% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are related to medium- and heavy-duty vehicles. Navistar is dedicating resources to measure and reduce the impacts of our business on the environment.

gearing up for decarbonization
With the ambition to become carbon neutral by 2050, Navistar is downshifting fossil fuel use across our operations and in our solutions. The foundational step in our decarbonization plans involves using energy efficiently.

zero-emissions vehicles (zevs)
The future is electric. We’re expanding our capacity to produce ZEVs with goals to achieve 50% zero-emissions new vehicle sales by 2030 and 100% by 2040.

toward a net-zero future

Net zero is the elimination of all greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activity. Electric ZEVs can, depending on the emissions profile of the electricity used to charge them, enable a fully zero-emissions footprint when charged with zero-fossil fuel energy.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND SCIENCE-BASED TARGETS

Science-based targets (SBTs) are greenhouse gas reduction goals for businesses aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement. We plan to submit targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), an independent group that validates corporate targets, in 2023.

Scope 1

Fuels and combustion sources needed to run Navistar’s operations and facilities generate Scope 1 emissions.

Scope 2

Scope 2 emissions are produced from purchased energy, such as electricity, heating and cooling, used to operate our company.

Scope 3

Use of Navistar’s products is the greatest source of our Scope 3 emissions, which also include emissions from Navistar’s customer and supplier ecosystem.

TOWARD A CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Circularity focuses on maximizing resources and minimizing waste. From raw materials to remanufacturing and recycling, we are committed to state-of-the-art sustainability stewardship across the lifecycle of our solutions. This includes evaluating energy and materials used in production, energy that fuels product distribution, and how customers use our products.
reduce
Navistar took a major step to cut waste at our Powertrain Plant in Huntsville, Alabama, reducing annual wastewater disposal by 99.3% using evaporation technology and other methods. This saved 97.2% on hauling and disposal costs.

reuse
Donating trucks and buses to train future technicians gives our vehicles extended life. Navistar also refurbishes and reuses its IT equipment wherever possible to divert toxic metals from the environment and cut GHG emissions.

remanufacture
Granting new life to worn products, Navistar sells and distributes around 3,000 remanufactured parts. Four central facilities collect and refurbish parts to support circularity – and our goal is to generate 20% of parts revenue from remanufactured parts.

recycle
In 2021, Navistar recycled 67% of all waste generated, which moves us closer to our goal of a 75% recycling rate. Our broad recycling efforts cover everything from cardboard and packaging material to paint solvents and IT equipment.
