Navistar's Commitment

Sustainability: Improved Outcomes Now and for the Future

Navistar is committed to innovative sustainability. Led by our vice president of health, safety, security and productivity, Dr. William Bunn, and our vice president for environmental affairs, Edith Ardiente, this commitment to sustainability plays out at three levels:

Products

Navistar makes great products - engines, trucks, and school buses - that help drive the economy.

Navistar makes great products - engines, trucks, and school buses - that help drive the economy. Our products have consistently met federal goals for cleaning up diesel emissions, often in advance of government deadlines. We were the first to meet tough goals for 2007 engines and vehicles, and we will meet the additional standards set for 2010 products. We also are taking the lead in hybrid technology, introducing the first U.S. school buses and commercial vehicles with hybrid-electric powertrains. Our hydraulic hybrid vehicles promise to achieve fuel economy gains of 45 percent to 50 percent, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 40 percent. WESTSTART-CalStart has recognized our leadership in hybrid technology with its Blue Sky award. Our long-haul trucks use advanced aerodynamics to deliver a fuel-economy advantage.

Operations

Our manufacturing facilities operate in a way that continuously enhances energy efficiency, reduces use of materials, and uses recycling and other innovative practices to eliminate environmental impact and reduce cost.

Our manufacturing facilities operate in a way that continuously enhances energy efficiency, reduces use of materials, and uses recycling and other innovative practices to eliminate environmental impact and reduce cost. We were the first truck equipment manufacturer to be certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as both a SmartWay Transport Partner and a SmartWay Manufacturer. We are proud to be active in the Business Roundtable's Climate RESOLVE program, which helps us focus on monitoring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our facilities as well as products. As a member of the Wildlife Habitat Council, we have established wildlife-management teams composed of employee volunteers who are working to create and restore wildlife projects on areas of open land. During the last two decades, Navistar and its facilities have been recognized for environmental excellence more than 100 times through awards and recognition from government officials, regulatory agencies, environmental groups, environmental publications and others.

People

Our commitment to people is evident in our concentration on employee health and safety, which not only benefits our entire workforce, but also leads to lower absenteeism, improved productivity and reduced health care costs that benefit the entire organization.

Our commitment to people is evident in our concentration on employee health and safety, which not only benefits our entire workforce, but also leads to lower absenteeism, improved productivity and reduced health care costs that benefit the entire organization. For the eighth straight year, Navistar received the Gold Well Workplace Award from the Wellness Council of America.

In addition to supporting many good causes that help those in need, Navistar and our employees place a special emphasis on education. Company technical and environmental education programs address the needs of students in inner-city school systems, while mentorship from industry leaders gives students a head start toward a meaningful, stable career path.
